{"id":317,"date":"2014-10-23T19:26:35","date_gmt":"2014-10-24T00:26:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johndhutton.com\/?p=317"},"modified":"2015-07-06T12:23:04","modified_gmt":"2015-07-06T17:23:04","slug":"sharepoint-2013-on-site-vs-office-365-cloud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johndhutton.com\/?p=317","title":{"rendered":"SharePoint 2013 On-Site vs Office 365 Cloud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So you have been tasked with choosing between in on-site vs cloud versions of SharePoint.<br \/>\nYou have another choice and that is to do both also known as hybrid.<\/p>\n<p>SharePoint 2013 features are the same on-site and in the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>A Forrester Research Inc. survey of IT decision makers shows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>62% (82% in 2010) plan to deploy SharePoint 2013 on-premises<\/li>\n<li>8% (4% in 2010)\u00a0will do so in a Microsoft datacenter<\/li>\n<li>26% (5% in 2010)\u00a0will deploy SharePoint in a hybrid mode, both on-premises and cloud<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While that shows a clear majority\u00a0plan to run SharePoint in-house, that number is down from 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Metalogix Software Corporate Survey had similar findings, showing<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>55% intend to continue running SharePoint entirely in-house<\/li>\n<li>10% plan to run it purely in the cloud.<\/li>\n<li>35% are planning hybrid SharePoint implementations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let us look at some\u00a0business rules that\u00a0would slant you\u00a0one way or the other.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Business Rule<\/td>\n<td>On-Site<\/td>\n<td>Cloud<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Company does not want information outside the premises<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">X<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Company has users over across multiple continent<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\"><\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">X<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Company is involved in a lot of legal battles<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">X<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Company needs to interact with external clients<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\"><\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">X<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Company wants to be use SharePoint as Order Entry System<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">X<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Company does not have IT Operational department personal to support SharePoint long term<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\"><\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">X<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Need to connect SharePoint to on-site systems<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">X<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Company is moving everything to the &#8220;Cloud&#8221;<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\"><\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">X<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Company does not have financial resources to take on yearly cloud membership fees<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">X<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Company want to increase their mobile access<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\"><\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">X<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Security issues have caused a lot of companies to avoid the cloud. With all the security breaches in the news a lot these days, it easy to see why companies IT Security officers do want anything to do with any cloud based system.<\/p>\n<p>The promise of reduced cost have a lot of company thinking about moving to the cloud, doing research on cloud benefits, or taking the plunge and moving to the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>Comfort level with what you know has caused a lot to go with on-site implementation.<\/p>\n<p>Areas which I have seen that influence the direction are: Comfort, Cost &amp; Legal.<br \/>\n&#8211; If a company already has SharePoint\u00a0on-site and they are upgrading to 2013, they tend to keep it on-site.<br \/>\n&#8211; If a company is looking to reduce infrastructure cost, they tend to go with a cloud based solution.<br \/>\n&#8211; If a company&#8217;s legal department want to control their intellectual properties and assets, they tend to keep it on-site<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So you have been tasked with choosing between in on-site vs cloud versions of SharePoint.
